During Summers, we take a break from our usual after-school programming to take our teens on a variety of special events, specialty sports activities, service trips, and camp trips. These excursions and trips allow teens and mentors to spend quality time together building relationships, as well as allowing us to provide more experiential learning opportunities for our teens.
We recognize that while amazing mentorship and discipleship can take place in communal settings like our after-school program, summer program, and during special events, there is also immense value in having consistent one-on-one time spent between mentors and teens.
For this reason, we also facilitate mentoring relationships for our teens and mentors in safe one-on-one settings. During this time, mentors and teens meet in public spaces to talk about life and spend quality time together doing things like playing sports, going to the mall, or going to an amusement park. It is our hope that through these one-on-one times, mentors and teens are able to develop even deeper relationships and have time to go deeper in their discussions about life.
To supplement our daily after-school programming during the school year, we facilitate special events once a month for our teens to have fun with each other and with mentors, and to invite friends to come who may not know what MYTHIRDPLACE is about. These special events can include anything from beach days to our annual Halloween Zombie Run, and provide many great memories that teens and mentors alike look back on.
Through partnerships with California State Parks and local church fellowships, we host a handful of these camps throughout the year. During each FAMCAMP, teens are challenged to step out of their comfort zones and fully engage in the camping experience. The purpose of this camp is to get away from it all, gain understanding and appreciation for the outdoors, dream big dreams for their futures, and build community.
